Excellent gf-friendly Christmas lunch at Holloways
My friends from the City & Guilds course I did a few years ago met for our December jolly at Holloways, an amazing store and cafe in the rolling hills in the Worcestershire, in a village called Suckley. I had phoned the day before to check that they could feed me, and was impressed with the calm and informative way in which they said that they did have lots of food that was suitable for me.
Whilst it may seem strange, I had a surprisingly delicious curry while my friends ate turkey or nut roast dinner...not because that was the only thing that I could eat safely but because it was what I fancied. I have actually got to the stage where I find it difficult to chose what to eat in restaurants because there was such a long period where all I was offered was bare salad- or even told there was nothing I could eat. I didn't have a starter, but the other person who needed gf free food had a thick vegetable soup and gf rolls - they looked like DS ciabatta, which is almost the only packaged bread I buy for myself occasionally.
I had a desert as well, again a choice. How difficult, I chose meringue with mulled fruits minus the cream. I also ordered coffee. I wondered if they would fall down at this final hurdle- many restaurants seem unable to translate an order for a gf meal into a a coffee without a biscuit at the end of the meal. The coffee came - with a mini meringue. The waiter apologised that it was meringue overload; normally they would have given me a gf brownie, but as it had butter in and I had said no dairy (though it is not so big a problem for me) they had carried this through to the end. I was very impressed.
I also found it quite surprising that I had no cross contamination symptoms, even from sitting with my friends eating flaky breads, stuffing and cakes. I often find I feel ill just being near people eating glutened foods, so this is very impressive.
The general atmosphere was very pleasant, the staff attentive, inventive and willing to please. It is a pity it isn't nearer - I'd make it a regular venue for lunch and coffee breaks. They even had a blueberry gf cake - I spotted this as I paid my bill. I gave the staff a 60% tip and sincere thanks. It is a long time since I enjoyed a meal in a restaurant as much.

Madhatters Tea Shop- Launceston, Cornwall - gluten free
I ate at a cafe in Boscastle, The Spinning Wheel, which proudly announced gluten free foods, supplied by Mad Hatter's.
I ordered a cornish pasty. I was pleased it was available, but when it came found it inedible. The pastry had crumbled just in getting it to the plate, the filling was nasty, and the herb flavour of the pastry dominated everything. Still, I was impressed it was available. As an incessant baker I was disappointed, but I am sure it is better than most of the gf foods available through stores.
However, what impressed me less was that I couldn't find out what was in the pasty. I asked about the flour, as I am assiduous about avoiding baking levels of xanthum gum. The waitress said they couldn't tell me what was in it - they asked but were refused. I am sure this cannot be legal - as a part time baker of foods I have to supply clients with a full list of ingredients. As it was, the waitress spoke to someone on the phone and they said there was no xanthum gum in the pastry. The salad was bare as they did admit that the vinegar was malt, but I couldn't find out what the coleslaw was slathered in so I left that.
Trying to meet the needs of people with food intolerances is hard work. Trying to protect recipes ( if they produce excellent food) makes sense. However, you do need to list ingredients in quantity order as a producer, so why should this cafe not be told what was in the food they bought and advertised on a large board as being gluten free?
I went to the cafe in Launceston to talk to the staff - I was on holiday in the area for the day. The shop was closed as it was Saturday afternoon. I may email them and ask why the cafe they supply will not tell customers what is in the food - when I posted this I immediately got a note from a customer saying that they are very happy to talk about what was in their food at Mad Hatter's.
I am reminded of asking about the ingredients in a Butternut squash curry at a service station. After a wait of at least five minutes the server came back and said the only allergen listed was shellfish. Who would have thought the dish that looked like the only hot meal suitable for vegetarians in would have shellfish!
I have been in cafes before where the staff insisted that as the food was supplied centrally they did not know what was in each dish. In those cases I left. I do find this casual attitude to essential information in the food industry appalling.

SAFE CHIPS and gooey brownies ..gluten free. Blades Cafe in Northleach, glos.
Found a real treasure. Blades Cafe, in Northleach (www.blades.me.uk The Old Prison, Fosseway, 01451 860715 daytimes not evenings) has great gluten free brownies that I wouldn't be ashamed of serving. They make their own from Doves Farm flour. They are rich, intense and gooey.
The cafe has a large unfussy space with toys for the kids, a large carpark, and outdoor playspace.
When asked about meals they said they would be happy to adjust anything on the menu to suit if at all possible. The chips are fries in a dedicated chip pan so no cross contamination. Safe chips!
If you are nearby detour to this excellent place.....of course I don't yet know that I ate hear unscathed but all the other signs are good.(three hours later - still ok)
If you have a spare hour, some curiosity and some patience, visit the amazing little museum of mechanical music nearby, Rachmaninoff plays the Steinway!
