McDonald's fries - are they gluten free?

I have been following a Facebook conversation on which McDonald's fries around the world are fully gluten free. I don't think I have been in a McDonald's for about thirty years (and I was vegetarian the one time I did that, so you can imagine I ate well!), but I know my niece uses them as their meat patties are gf.

I had a quick look on the web.  Their ingredients page is very easy to use and states that their fries are completely gluten free. They are cooked in dedicated frying vats.  I don't eat fried food unless I can be sure a dedicated fryer that isn't used for any breaded items is used, so this is useful to know.

  1. Thank you for doing all of the hard work for us. I had read in someone's blog that their daughter worked in McDonald's and she said that as well. Like you, I don't eat at McDonald's either but a month ago, I was with others who bought McDonald's and when they offered me some chips (we call fries chips in New Zealand) I ate some and felt good about being able to eat them. Not that I enjoyed them much but the fact that I was pretty sure I could safely have them made me feel good.
Now you have confirmed for me that this is correct. Next time I might buy a whole carton for myself :-)

  2. Hi Sleepinghorse - we call them chips in England too...but I think McDonalds call them fries..who knows, but they are certainly not the thin round slivers of potatoes the English call crisps and others call chips...

  3. I have yet to see any confirmation on any site there is more debate over the subject than an actual answer. I have the answer- DO NOT eat McDonalds fries! I had some last night thinking I would be fine but I woke up this morning feel like hell. So know matter what you read if you have a gluten intolerance DO NOT eat their fries.

  5. In England and the rest of the UK, we eat Walkers crisps, home cooked chips (thick cut), and McCain's fries (thin cut). I can't tell you the last time I ate McDonalds fries as I don't know when they started outsourcing to McCain's.
